Who is a seeker? What is a seeker? Do you seek of truth, or pleasure, or destruction? “Seek and ye shall find”, find what? A famous quote from the Bible says “seek the Lord and you shall find him.” It appears some humans have an inborn desire, or urge, or a need to seek out something in their lifetime. It gives them a goal, a fulfillment, or a purpose that some people simply cannot move forward without. The word seeker (noun) is derived from the word seek (verb), whose origin is before the year 900. Seek is defined most commonly as, to go in search or quest of, to desire, want, look for, search, act, or move. Seeker is the person or thing that is doing the seeking. There are two meanings for the word seeker. The free online dictionary states 1) One that seeks and 2) A device used in a moving object, especially a missile, that locates a target by detecting light, heat, or other radiation. This paper will be focusing on the first definition which relates to a person.
When first hearing the word, seek, a feeling of an urgency to find something moves about inside me. Seek, which refers to the action, brings me into the picture as the person who is to be doing the act, the seeker. Almost a stirring of restlessness occurs, as I picture someone who is not content in this world to simply, “be”. They are constantly striving to learn more and grow deeper in their understanding of life and who they are destined to become. Renee Descartes says, “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.” This shows to me that a seeker of truth would undoubtedly need to have an open mind to encounter all possibilities before making a final decision. Most often, the word seeker is connected to the word truth, but there are many forms of seeking, such as, pleasure, treasure, and self-realization, the list can go on and on.
If you have a difficult time understanding the meaning of the word seeker, here are some very close words in definition that might shine a light on your interpretation; explorer, quester, pathfinder, searcher, and inquirer. I came across an online article from churchfortoday.net that held some beautiful explanations on seeking, such as, “the body’s need for its own fulfillment, for that which is beyond itself” and “to seek is to be alive, not just breathing, going to work, and taking care of a family”, but the “realization that you are thirsting and in search of that which is acceptable only in the realm beyond the one in which you find yourself”. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “No facts are to me sacred; none are profane; I simply experiment, an endless seeker with no past at my back”.
A seeker is always compelled to do, to be! There is a sense of being called or summoned, on the edge of a revelation or discovery, that cannot be silenced within your soul. A seeker can be a person seeking religious knowledge, one who devotes their life to search for enlightenment and salvation, someone making a search or an inquiry, or simply one who seeks. What comes after the phrase, one who seeks, leaves the door wide open to each individual on what it is they desire to seek. A pleasure seeker may feel energized by finding and experiencing ways to make his or her own body feel good, others get a similar sensation from making someone else feel good. Some may actually get their satisfaction in seeking revenge, whether in the form of religious, spiritual, or mental.
The word, seeker, brings on a challenge to those individuals who have a need to further themselves or something in our world or universe. Ultimately I would hope the positive seekers will out number the negative seekers. Sometimes it feels the only way to look at life is through the eyes of an explorer, if there is any self motivation in your soul at all, otherwise I am guessing there are those that are happy to just exist and do not ponder why they are here, or how they can better life. A seeker does not have the choice to just be, there is an inner calling to press on and go deeper, to ask how things came to be, and why they are the way they are. It seems the solution of, “It is because it is” just will not suffice in the lifetime of a true seeker.
